A Christian Voice In A Changing Culture
Slam dunked into mercy kansas city conversion therapy ban

Slam Dunked (into Mercy)

Once again, we gathered to pray on the City Hall steps; this time we awaited the outcome of our efforts before the Kansas City Council to ensure equality for counselors and clients seeking to align sexual identity with Christian values.

We trusted in Jesus, not the Council. It was clear in last week’s public hearing that no council person was chaste; each one nearly swooned over the activists who testified. This youthful band of ‘victims’ had opened their bed wide to the Council for months prior to any public awareness of the therapy ban. The Council and LGBTers had long consummated their affair.

I led our prayer group in the Divine Mercy chaplet, which directs us to place our trust squarely in Jesus. He alone takes the darkness and turn it around to create a radiance brighter than the gloom of deception.

The deception surrounding the City Council during that vote took our breath away. Keep in mind this is the Midwest—I wager each of the 13 Council members, including Mayor Lucas who proudly declares his faith, would consider themselves Christian. Yet no Council member (except one whose mind was clearly made up) nor mayoral aide would meet with us to discuss our reasonable concerns about this ban. We were flies in the oil of their LGBT+ anointing.

A minister opened the voting session with a Jesus-centered prayer. A few minute later the Mayor invited up a host of other-gender impersonators who draped in rainbow flags tearfully thanked the Council for instituting a Transgender Remembrance Day on November 20th. The Council all but patted themselves on the back for this oblique commemoration. Remember who? On the 20th? Why?

We knew then we were toast. We knew then that the express claim of the Council to uphold honor and justice (written boldly on the chamber wall) was a sham. When the ban came up soon after, the Mayor thanked a sexually ambiguous councilwoman for opening the Council’s eyes to the clear and present danger of reparative therapy upon Kansas City youth. Huh. The Council had no evidence of any therapist or teen client in the city who had damaged or been damaged by seeking to overcome same-sex attraction or working through gender dysphoria by becoming reconciled to their biological selves. None.

The evidence: trumped up, irrelevant anecdotes punctuated by outrageous allusions to Nazi-torture techniques. Hyperbole and propaganda. No evidence. Lies carried the day.

The Council vote on the ban barring teens from therapeutic choice was smiley, unanimous, and once again, self-congratulatory. It passed in a flash.

I felt the deadening realization that out of 13 ‘Christians’ who run Kansas City, not one of them represents what I hold most dear.

My colleague Marco was correct. The Council was dull and uninformed, swayed foolishly by emotional appeals to protect the most vulnerable. Protection from what? Many of the LGBT+ set we encountered were evidently wounded souls; now their wounds are sealed in by the false solutions the Council celebrates —surgically remove your penis! Poison yourselves with alien hormones! Marry your same-sex friend! This Council has no vision of the human person, no sense of the nobility of gender, and what our sexuality is for. Claiming to be Christian, they are secularists who reduce the horizon of hope for the most vulnerable.

So we pray for Divine Mercy. We seek immersion in it. Slam dunked by a Council dulled by rainbow opiates, we trust Jesus to turn around this travesty of justice for the greater good of teens in Kansas City and throughout Missouri. We have just begun to fight, and we will do so out of Almighty mercy. I close with the last lines of the Divine Mercy chaplet.

‘Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and pour out Your mercy upon us, that in difficult moments, we may not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.’

Kingdom Clash 1: Fighting City Hall

We met in front of City Hall next to the Lincoln statue, featuring Abe and his son Tad. Fitting. Here we were, Christians of all stripes, diverse yet united in the love of our Father who listens and stoops down to make us great. Buttoned down Catholics, earthy Jesus people, young Latinos with sassy Pentecostal authority, clear-eyed Baptists who advocate on their knees for His-Kingdom-come, agreed together: ‘Be glorified in our witness of change, a choice every teen deserves…’

We were preparing ourselves for the public hearing on Kansas City’s near slam-dunk efforts to pass a counseling ban for teens seeking change. On the steps slightly above our prayer group, rainbow activists ranted ‘We’re here, we’re queer’… Yeah, we know. In truth, the rag-tag group screaming their intercessions rule the social-political landscape of Kansas City. They shout their laments from every roof-top, the City Council nods dully, and no-one questions.

Standing room only in the City Council chamber: evenly divided between the rainbow set and Christians surrounding Desert Stream. As the stories of torture at the hands of diabolical pastors and therapists wore on, I could not help but notice a disturbing sameness (revisionist history, anyone?) to the plot-lines: innocent teen, wicked helper, now fractured adult whose vengeance is asserting political pressure to make sure every teen experiences the ‘joy’ of adding another bizarre adjective to one’s sexual identification, be it pan-sexual, non-binary, or pre-trans.

As a parent, I could not help but discern the lack of any real fatherly presence/guidance in these young people’s lives. Now subject to one another’s distorted gender identities, these poor ones don’t have a chance to grow through life-giving community. They are vulnerable, not because of ‘conversion therapy’, but because of the weak solutions afforded them by the clinical community and greater culture.

The Father loves them and only wants to heal them. He keeps reaching, but these celebrated rainbow ‘victims’ cannot or will not see Him. Who needs God when your side is carrying the day? The chummy repartee between witnesses and the committee suggests that the Council has bought the LGBT+ lament: ‘we have been hurt and you have to stop everyone from hurting us further.’

Two hours later, we shared our perspectives. My time came. Overcome by a greater power, I combusted and demanded real justice: ‘Why should the LGBT+ freedom to morph into whatever gender variation one wants bar persons who understand freedom differently? Why should persons who want to be reconciled to their biological gender, or to overcome same-sex attraction, be denied good psychological care? I insisted that conversion therapy is a bogeyman argument designed to hide the agenda driving the bill: walk our LGBT+ way or the highway.’

At that the rainbow set went ballistic. They stood up shouting and waving rainbow flags. Behind them, Christians stood and prayed: a few raised Bibles. Kingdoms clashed. The moderator demanded order in her court. Dark powers manifested and nearly lunged at me.

Lines are drawn. Today’s LGBT+ activists criminalize other ways of perceiving and resolving sexual identity issues. Christians are on the firing line. We must be willing to take a stand in the public square for how we understand choice and the freedom to secure good advocates for our choices.

Please pray: the KC City Council will vote this Thursday the 14th on the counseling ban. If this hearing is any indication, the Council has already made up its mind. Pray that the excellent legal intervention of Liberty Counsel will make a difference. Pray for our awakening to Jesus’ relevance for all gender-confused youth and how a wounded few are trying to obscure that truth. We must convey His Kingdom-come as never before, come what may.

Disappearing Kansas City Counseling Ban

Disappearing?

I met Carol a year or so ago at a coffee joint; she possessed a cool style and looked at me with piercing, indigo blue eyes. She was also gradually concealing her womanhood in an attempt to ‘transition.’ I felt intuitively her years of torment and sought to reinforce kindly the beauty I beheld in her.

As weeks went on, she disappeared behind men’s clothes and facial hair. I saw her last week as ‘Kevin’. My mind went blank and I looked haplessly in those eyes. Her voice squeaked a greeting as if she (approx. 30-years-old) was going through puberty.

I am seeking God and wise counsel as to how to best care for her in the little ways and moments we interact. I pray for her family who may well have agreed confusedly with Carol’s way of resolving her gender-identity conflict. The logic? ‘Better for Carol to disappear than for Carol to kill herself.’ I agree. I rejoice in her life and respect her right to choose how to resolve a longstanding gender conflict.

Her ‘cure’ is costly: on her own body (toxic hormones and invasive surgeries) and social network (disassembling old bonds, seeking tenuous new ones). Was she given a choice to explore the option of becoming reconciled to her biological self?

Kansas City’s Mayor and Council will vote this Thursday to deny her or anyone that choice. My city has initiated a push to ban ‘conversion therapy’—code word for any minor in conflict who seeks help to make peace with one’s birth gender. The bill highlights ‘Gender Pathways’, a local treatment center that offers every freedom to dysphoric youth except resolving the psychological reasons as to why one is rejecting his or her birthright.

The powers-that-be have tried to hide their counseling ban agenda from public view. They announced the bill and their near slam-dunk victory only after protest from us and others. It seems they know what they want, and they are going after it. We have become an inconvenient truth for Kansas City. They want us to disappear. No way.

We cannot disappear. We must tell the truth of how faith and sound process enabled us to overcome homosexual and transgender identities. We will make known our stories at City Hall this Wednesday. Come pray beforehand with us at 930am on the city steps or just join us at 1030am in the Council chambers. (Will keep you posted if this changes as it often does in politics.) Pray for us!

Pray that we might convey reasonably and lovingly an alternate path to healing. Pray also that we would line up good legal counsel to fight the city in case the ban passes. (The Council could vote as early as the 31st.) This is not a good time for Kansas City to make such a ban, as recent rulings in Tampa, Fla. (Vazzo v. Tampa) and New York City (Schwartz v. City of New York) have demonstrated.

A strange power has darkened the understanding of well-meaning big shots. We must break that power by telling persons the whole truth. Give each person a choice–but give them one to make! Kids grow up fast these days and don’t need condescension; they need choice. Kansas City wants to take away that choice. We won’t let them. Rather than disappear, we will shine through the confusion.

‘We have renounced secret and shameful ways. We do not use deception, nor do we distort the Word of God. Rather, by speaking the truth plainly, we commend ourselves to every person’s conscience in the sight of God’ (2 Cor. 4:2).
