A Christian Voice In A Changing Culture

AB 2943 and Divine Mercy

Will California Preserve Freedom of Choice?

The California legislature tried to railroad AB 2943 through the Senate; it looked like a sure thing for a political body intent on outlawing any moral action that clashes with the state’s LGBTQ+ juggernaut. Strangely, the bill was put on hold until August 6th. Besides giving dissenters like us more time to pray and engage the powers-that-be, what happened?

Divine mercy. That’s what happened. 2000 years ago the powers-that-be thought they had vanquished Jesus. Yet His death loosed a river of life that breaks the stronghold of death in every person who calls upon His Name. The Cross is the ultimate expression of divine mercy: it set into motion the truth that cruelties of every kind, including unjust laws like AB 2943, do not have the final say. God turns them around in order to achieve an even greater good.

All it requires is for God’s people to prayerfully gather in humility and compassion. From San Diego to Redding, Christian dissenters from San Diego to Redding have amplified the truth that Jesus changes lives. Sexual wholeness outshines a ‘gay’ wedding or a ‘sex’ change any day. For the last four months, Christians in California have displayed the glorious splendor of the Kingdom. Wisely and persistently, weak people being redeemed by Jesus have countered worldly thinking that threatens free speech and action—through their own stories, they have championed citizens’ rights to choose how they will resolve gender issues.

Bethel Church Redding arose in response to AB 2943 as never before. Two members, Elizabeth Woning and Ken Williams, both formerly ‘gay’-identified, have worked tirelessly and effectively to engage with lawmakers in Sacramento and to rally churches throughout California to support choice by refusing AB 2943. I met them 20-months-ago at the onset of their Bethel-based ministry ‘Equipped to Love’ (equippedtolove.com); though clear in their call, their course of action wasn’t. Not anymore. These two are as empowered and focused as anyone in the field. Get a copy of their booklet ‘Changed’. For such a time as this.

Two women from Living Waters in Pasadena met with the representative of a key decision-making senator in Sacramento; they influenced her by telling their stories wisely and well. Many more friends of mine in California who in the past have been reticent to tell the whole truth of Jesus’ work in their lives have boldly gone before cameras and large groups to make known His merciful love in their sexual brokenness. Some have risked jobs due to LGBT+ employers. We endure shame for love’s sake, for the joy set before us.

Faithful lawyers, orthodox clinicians, and pastors of every ethnicity have joined us at every turn to offer wise support. There is an army of intrepid truth-bearers who are arising in this hour. AB 2943 provoked this army. This is divine mercy—God turning around injustice in order to achieve His greater aim.

We are undoubtedly helped by two rulings last month by the Supreme Court. Clearly now, the highest court in our land is not inclined to any group being railroaded by the government when legitimate and deeply held views are at stake, including a cake-maker in Colorado who could not in good conscience bake for a ‘gay’ wedding (his resistance was honored by the court in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. CCRC) or pro-life pregnancy centers in California who need not advertise for abortions. (Under California law, the centers were forced to do so until NIFLA v. Becerra.)

The implications of these decisions are huge for AB 2943. Christians have an objective yet countercultural understanding of sexual wholeness that has been demonized by the California legislature. If AB 2943 passes, it will make a bee-line to the Supreme Court where, in my humble opinion, it hasn’t a chance. Can the California legislature see this? If so, did that contribute to its delayed vote?

Divine mercy. When Jesus’ members humble themselves and offer bad things back to Him, He turns them around and does something better. That is good news for a world that awaits the outcome of AB 2943. Massachusetts wants to pass such a law, as does the UK and France. Will the faithful show the world a different, better way? Maybe California will preserve freedom for sexual wholeness.

Easter: Snow and Burn

The glorious 50-day season of Easter kicked off in Kansas City with a freak snowstorm (we managed to pull off some not indecent bbq anyhow…) Regardless of the weather, whatever the dismal mindset, God calls us to burn bright for Him. He enables us to do so.

I urge you to pray right now from some good friends who are burning bright today in Sacramento CA. Using their own stories of how Jesus and His healing community helped them to overcome the domination of same-sex attraction, Anne Paulk of Restored Hope Network, and Elizabeth Woning and Ken Davis of Bethel Church Redding (among others) are shining to ensure that AB 2943 dissolves like snow before the sun when it comes up for vote next Monday in the CA legislature.

This insane bill turns goodness on its ear by outlawing any helper (church-based and otherwise) who offers counsel or materials for cost to persons seeking freedom from gender disintegration. That means Living Waters groups would be banned from their state of origin.

Think about it. Today, California leads the nation in celebrating gender disintegration and in seeking to outlaw any remedy for what is an unhappy condition at best. Further, California vilifies anyone who seeks to be at peace with his or her biological gender. In a recent segment of the popular CW teen series ‘Riverdale’, a young girl with confusing sexual feelings (every teen) is subject to a ‘conversion therapy’ madhouse led by a sinister nun who greets her with a syringe and a ghastly smile. The point is clear: seeking to understand and resolve identity conflicts is demonic. Welcoming the demons is cool.

So we urge kids to welcome their demons. Tim Cook, the ‘gay’ CEO of Apple who came out proudly in 2014 (‘I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me’) just veered off the course set by predecessor Steve Jobs; the latter detested porn use on the iPhone but Cook just chided an interviewer by claiming ‘I’m not making fun’ of anyone who employs the iPhone browser in that way. Another ‘gay’ cultural hero, Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, recently expressed the moral difference between gay and straight couples: gays favor open relationships in which commitment does not involve sexual fidelity. Ugh.

With California leading the way, we have moved beyond granting everyone the ‘freedom’ to do whatever he or she wants, sexually-speaking; we now want to legislate out of existence opportunities for persons to overcome addictions and infidelities that stem from gender disintegration.

Please right now say a prayer for Anne and Elizabeth and Ken. Pray for clear and sane and gentle voices to be heard today in Sacramento on behalf of every person on whom God’s favor rests to become chaste. The right to worship and to heal in accord with the God of Jacob and Jesus should be encouraged, not vilified or outlawed. And pray hard that next Monday April 9th AB 2943 will dissolve as fast as a freak snow storm on Easter.

Zeal for our House

Jesus casts out robbers from His Father’s house for us. That starts with the integrity of our personal temples. He cares about our dignity as male and female and hates that dignity to be defiled. Though we are made in His image, that image is marred and He gives all to redeem it. We must do our part. When others obstruct our efforts at becoming who He made us to be, they infuriate Him; Jesus acts decisively to cast out those robbers.

Such robbery is on full display in the California legislature. Three bills are up for a vote one week from Monday (April 9th) and each bill bars human beings from securing the help they need to become integrated gendered beings. Please pray with us this Holy Week that Jesus might hear our prayers and vanquish these robbers. Consider:

AB 1779: Six years after CA led the nation in outlawing helpers from offering clinical service to minors seeking to overcome unwanted same-sex attraction, legislators are now trying to impose this violation of personal rights on adults too, starting here. This bill would ban any adult under guardianship from securing help for same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria. The narrow application here (adults under legal care of another adult) is a bridge that will be used in the future to ban all services for adults seeking help to overcome same-sex attraction or dysphoria. California cannot afford make outlaws of skilled Christian helpers for the broken!

AB 2943 is worse. This bill prohibits the sale of any resources that aim to reduce same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria. That means all publications, healing or counseling resources, conferences, and teaching opportunities that involve financial cost. This outrageous bill is designed to obstruct any Christian who helps others overcome gender identity disorders; it equally bars persons who seek to align themselves with God’s design for their humanity. It is a slam on free speech and enterprise and mostly, the rights of persons to choose to heal.

AB 2119: Any child in CA foster care must only be offered counseling and medical help that lines up with the gender that the child wants to be. That would outlaw good sense—the truth that we have a gender ordination and that it is physically, psychologically, and spiritually impossible to change gender. A child’s confusion leading to gender mutilation and misery is being enacted here. It is child abuse.

Gratefully, Jesus is stirring up zeal for human dignity, the houses God entrusts to each of us. That applies to today and to the dignity of future generations. Anne Paulk of Restored Hope Network, the Bethel Church Redding, Lou Engel and his intercessory prayer force, and hundreds of Christians are fighting in Sacramento and on their knees to ensure that Jesus and His people vanquish these bills.

Would you join us in praying that these bills come to nothing on Monday April 9th? If you are a Californian, would you contact your assembly person and gently express your opposition to this legislation?

Satan rages against the beauty of God in humanity, and employs well-intentioned persons to do his will. Let’s stop his robbery of human dignity by opposing this legislation.
